New York Prisoners Claim Asbestos Exposure

September 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Everyone has rights to not be exposed to harmful substances, and that includes prisoners.  According to a recent story published by Newsday, both inmates of a local prison and correction officers have filed a notice of intent to sue the city for exposure to asbestos during the removal of carpet and floor tiles.  The most telling passage from the article appears below:

“Two correction officers have filed a notice of intent to sue the city for damages. They were supervising an inmate crew as it removed carpet that was stuck to floor tiles. Further exposure to the cancer-causing substance occurred when contractors tore up the flooring, according to court papers filed Monday.

The six state prison inmates have expressed interest in joining the legal action, according to the correction officers’ lawyer, Bernadette Panzella.”
