Brake Mechanics at High Risk for Asbestos Exposure

September 19th, 2007 · No Comments

A recent story published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer brought to light the danger that brake mechanics face every day they report for work.  Reporters Andrew Schneider and Carol Smith took a long look at the inventories of auto parts stores around the country, and the results were quite daunting, to say the least.

Exposure to asbestos can lead to several debilitating and life-shortening diseases, including mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer, among others.  There has been a nation-wide effort, supposedly, to remove asbestos from the marketplace, as the dangers associated with it are well beyond debate in the medical community.

The story detailed how “Millions of brakes on cars and trucks — and millions more waiting on parts-shop shelves nationwide — contain asbestos fibers that can kill mechanics.”  This was discovered despite the fact that state and federal officials reacted to this news with surprise.  In fact, the federal government has not issued any warnings to brake mechanics within the past ten years.

“The government is not doing its job,” said Dr. Richard Lemen, a former U.S. deputy surgeon general.  This leads to several terrible possibilities.  It is now general knowledge that exposure to this substance can kill people.  If you are one of those who have been exposed, you need to seek medical attention and then contact the asbestos lawyers at Williams Kherkher immediately for a free initial consultation.
