Asbestosis

Asbestosis got its name directly from exposure to this controversial substance.  Specifically, asbestosis results in a patient when asbestos fibers become trapped in the lung tissue after being inhaled.  Asbestos contains millions of microscopic fibers, and many of them are simply too small to be detected and prevented from entering the lungs by the body’s defense mechanisms. 

When these substances get past the body’s first line of defense, the lungs themselves attempt to fight the presence of these fibers.  They do so by trying to disintegrate/eliminate these fibers with the production of acid that attacks the foreign substance.

However, asbestos fibers cannot be eliminated by this acid, which leads to two negative results:

1. These fibers remain in the lungs, and
2. The acid continues to be produced, leading to the scarring of the lung tissues.

Over time, the continual scarring/damaging of the lung tissue can lead to a serious condition called pulmonary fibrosis, and this condition can ultimately lead to a total lack of lung/respiratory function.
