The EPA recently released a preliminary report detailing potential strategies for safer procedures involving the removal of asbestos from older buildings.  The study was put together by the EPA’s National Risk Management Research Laboratory and the Dallas regional office. 

This first new method of demolition that was attempted is called the Alternative Asbestos Control Method or AACM, and it was used on a building in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.  Another building in the same city was demolished using the older method, called the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) method. 

NESHAP basically involves removing some of the asbestos before demolishing the building at issue, while AACM also removes some of the potentially harmful materials, but the building is then watered down before demolition and during the demolition, with the intent being that the water’s presence will prevent some of the asbestos material from becoming airborne. 

The specifics of the report are expected to be made public on July 11, 2007, and the draft report is now available at http://www.epa.gov/region06/6xa/asbestos.htm.
