Even States Are Coming Under Asbestos-Related Scrutiny

September 19th, 2007 · No Comments

A recent story published in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune revealed a shocking allegation that an official department of the State of Minnesota suppressed data regarding the development of asbestos-related cancer for nearly one year.  All of the patients whose data was allegedly suppressed have since died of cancer.

Reporter David Shaffer detailed the allegation that the Minnesota Department of Health suppressed research about the development of deadly mesothelioma among Iron Range miners.  It was originally revealed that 17 range workers had developed a rare and serious form of mesothelioma  in March of 2006, but in March of 2007 it was revealed that an additional 35 workers had also suffered from the same disease.

Perhaps the most shocking allegation appears below:

“Health Department documents obtained by the Star Tribune show that officials had planned last year to disclose the information to mining unions, businesses, federal regulators and others. But state Health Commissioner Dianne Mandernach rejected those plans last fall.”

It was stated that these reports were withheld for fear of creating controversy among the 4,000 iron miners in Minnesota.  Additional research showed that a press release had been prepared in March of 2006 but was never released.

This is just one of many controversies of this sort, so if you have been exposed to asbestos, you need to contact the asbestos lawyers at Williams Kherkher today for a free initial consultation.
