The owner of an asbestos transportation company recently pleaded guilty to making false statements on a report filed with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that concerned the disposal of asbestos. Terrance Yates, chose not to fight the Information filed against him and his company, Hazport Solutions, Inc., located in Maryland.

Yates and his company had contracted with other firms to transport properly-removed asbestos to authorized landfills in Pennsylvania. However, Yates admitted that instead of transporting the asbestos to these approved landfills, the trailers were left on a lot in Maryland and left there for more than a year.

Eventually, these trailers were discovered by law enforcement, and the matter got worse for Yates when it was discovered that falsified records were furnished stating that the waste had been dumped in the authorized landfills.

The EPA inspected the trailers, and several problems were discovered, including the fact that the asbestos was not properly sealed and that there were no linings inside of the trailers, which was also a federal requirement for proper disposal. Yates faces a maximum of five years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
