You had to know that eventually, pharmaceutical companies would begin to work towards medication for treating mesothelioma, a disease that up until this point has not been cured by any treatment.  CNN Money published an article recently that reported that Eli Lilly and Co. has applied for approval in Europe to market a new drug, Alimta, that’s designed to treat lung cancer and one type of mesothelioma.

“Already federally approved in the United States, Alimta, an injection, is used as a second-line therapy for non-small cell lung cancer. It can also be used in combination with cisplatin as a first-line treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma, a type of cancer affecting the lungs.

NSCLC is the most common type of lung cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Lilly’s European Medicines Agency submission is based on a study that evaluated Alimta plus cisplatin, a type of chemotherapy. The study compared that treatment to Lilly’s other injectable Gemzar, plus cisplatin, a widely used lung cancer treatment. Gemzar’s patent begins expiration in 2010.”
