Incidents of mesothelioma, a deadly cancer caused by asbestos exposure, may be on the rise according to a recent report released by the Australian National University. Employers who have faced lawsuits brought by infected employees will continue to be susceptible to liability for work-related exposure cases for several years to come.
New cases of mesothelioma, and subsequent lawsuits against employers, are likely to remain on the rise for more than one decade, with a peak to occur as late as 2017, as recently reported by Dr. Mark Clements of the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health and presented at the Accident Compensation Seminar at the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. Significantly, the incidence of mesothelioma reflects predictions for all asbestos-related diseases.
According to Dr. Clements’ analysis, a peak of future total-incidence which was once predicted to occur in 2010, will likely be in excess of 35 percent higher than previous models had determined with a peak to occur in 2017 and 6430 cases of mesothelioma reported. Dr. Clements explained that this new findings have dramatic consequences for actuarial predictions with the number of cases predicted by 2060 at a 35 percent higher incidence than previously recognized by a prior KPMG model.
Just as employers should be concerned of this underestimated asbestos-related disease peak, so too is Dr. Clements concerned for this future rise of mesothelioma cases and other asbestos-related diseases in exposed employees. “Based on our modeling of future mesothelioma incidence it’s worrying that the liability may have been substantially under-estimated,” explained Dr. Clements.
