Earlier this month, the United States Senate passed a sweeping ban on all asbestos in the U.S. In addition to banning the sale of asbestos, the new legislation includes provisions to launch a public education campaign and provides federal funding for research into effective treatment for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. The bipartisan bill now moves to the U. S. House of Representatives for consideration.
In the U. S. House, the companion bill is entitled “The Bruce Vento Ban Asbestos and Prevent Mesothelioma Act of 2007” (H.R. 3339). Bruce Vento, a former Minnesota Congressman, died in 2000 from mesothelioma caused by his exposure to asbestos as a young man working in factories. Asbestos is so deadly that there is no known safe level of exposure. Even a tiny bit of fiber can cause disease.
Mesothelioma lawyers and asbestos victims across the country have long supported efforts to pass legislation banning asbestos and funding research. It is estimated that asbestos kills up to 10,000 Americans each year. Many of those victims file mesothelioma lawsuits. Despite the recent advances in medicine, there is no cure for mesothelioma.
