In New York, a furniture store owner attempted to save money on asbestos removal by hiring two gentlemen that had already entered guilty pleas for removing asbestos in a way that violated the Clean Air Act.
Shockingly enough, they were caught this time as well. They were caught when the EPA found asbestos fibers all over the furniture warehouse after the removal process was complete. As a result, the store owner had to spend $2.5 million having the asbestos in his store properly removed.
The two asbestos removers were paid $40,000 cash each but now will spend the next 18 months of their lives in jail. The furniture owner gets to avoid jail because he’s 77 years old and he cooperated in the arrest and conviction of the other two guys. However, he doesn’t get off scott free. He now gets to pay a $40,000 fine and is on probation for the next 5 years of his life.
