A month ago, the Senate passed the first law that bans asbestos, the disease-causing fiber used in various places. Now, the same public officials that supported the bill in its original version are speaking out against the fledgling bill. The reason for this about-face is that the original version of the bill has been watered down, thanks, in part, to powerful lobbyists and industry.
The original bill was written in June after testimony from leading health officials. The bill that was passed last month is so watered down that some industries and products aren’t covered by the ban at all. Still, Senator Patty Murray (D-Washington) is pleased with the bill, calling it a “major step forward.” She also says that if it were left up to her completely (i.e. a Senate with one member, no president, etc.), there would be a total ban on asbestos. Unfortunately for the senator and those that wanted a total ban, we have a system of checks and balances here.
