A report comes out today in Quebec that says that asbestos levels in homes in the Canadian mining town of Thetford Mines are dangerously high. The levels are high enough that if found in an American school, children would not be allowed to attend.

The town of Thetford Mines is at the heart of the Quebec mining area. Authorities think that asbestos, the cancer-causing mineral, is sinking into the homes from the large piles of mine waste that dot the area around the town. The homes with the highest levels of asbestos were either downwind of a mine-tailing pile or close to one. The tests also found elevated asbestos readings on windowsills and in soil around homes.

The testing was conducted by the Montreal-based activist group, Asbestos Victims Association of Quebec. They collected air samples from homes and around the town in 2003 and 2004. The samples were then submitted to an accredited American lab for testing.

Asbestos, a wool-like fiber, is dangerous and deadly when its fibers are inhaled and get stuck in the lungs. Asbestos exposure commonly results in mesothelioma.
