Discovery of an asbestos-wrapped pipe in Newton North High School, a Boston-area school, has halted construction. Workers discovered the pipe in the ground while they were working to remove asbestos-coated floor tiles that had been buried. The workers felt it might have been coated in asbestos and so sent the pipe off to a lab for testing. The tests done at the lab confirmed that there was a coat of asbestos on the pipe. Asbestos had long been used as a sort of flame-retardant insulation.
Jeremy Solomon, city spokesman, made a letter from Building Commissioner A Nocholas Parnell available yesterday. The letter indicates that the contractor overseeing the removal of asbestos from the area has submitted a revised remediation plan to the Department of Environmental Protection. Work will remain stopped until the amended remediation plan has been approved.
Solomon also said that the contractor had been working already to control dust and monitor air quality both on the site and inside the school. School had already been in session during the construction. Discovery of the pipe is not likely to interrupt classes.
