The contractors in charge of renovating a building in Oregon have been fined a total of $64,058 for violations of removal codes during their work on a retirement facility in 2006.
It is currently unknown whether or not residents of the facility have been exposed to the deadly fibers. Authorities are recommending that those that are concerned check with their doctors at the very minimum.
The main fine is that the facility was not inspected by a “competent person” prior to the start of drywall demolition.
The head of the construction company said the firm could not possibly have taken precautions for dealing with asbestos as no one on the job site knew that there was any present. Apparently, as soon as they were made aware of asbestos, the construction company took every step possible to minimize exposure to asbestos.
