The Attorneys General of Wisconsin and Minnesota are joining forces to combat the efforts of Northshore Mining Co. in federal court to lower the air quality standards for fibers in the air around the company’s taconite factory in Silver Bay, Minnesota. They are joined in their quest by numerous environmental groups from both states.

The states and environmental groups are trying to fight off the Northshore Mining Company’s attempt to have air quality standards for asbestos-like fibers lowered around their plant that is on the shores of Lake Superior. The current levels were established in 1974.  The current, court-ordered requirements  mandate that the fibers in the air around the plant must not exceed those found in St. Paul. There is no actual number named because there is no consensus on how much taconite dust is safe to be inhaled.

Some say that the fibers found in taconite dust can cause health problems such as the deadly lung disease mesothelioma. Northshore Mining, however, does not believe taconite dust has any affect on human health.
