Vinflunine Improves Response and Survival in Mesothelioma

November 26th, 2007 · No Comments

As reported by the Journal of Clinical Oncology in the October 20th issue, a recent study accessing the effect of high-dose vinflunine, a novel microtubuile inhibitor, on malignant pleural mesothelioma, gives patients hope for survival.

As previous studies involving numerous other systematic treatments have resulted in low response rates and no survival advantage, these results are quite refreshing for patients suffering from the asbestos-caused terminal cancer, mesothelioma.

Assessing the overall survival of 67 patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, the Churchill Hospital researchers in Oxford, UK, found a 13.8% overall response rate, a median progression-free survival of 3.2 months, a median overall survival of 10.8 months, and a 1-year survival rate of 36.9%. The authors conclude that “vinflunine is among the most active single agents in malignant pleural mesothelioma.”
