Ferry Workers Offered Testing for Asbestos Exposure

November 27th, 2007 · No Comments

Marine Atlantic, the company that runs the ferries that links Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, is offering its employees testing for asbestos exposure.

A union that represents 600 exployees of Marine Atlantic raised the alarm last month after fire-retardant materials containing asbestos were found on the MV Atlantic freighter during renovations. Employees were apparently unaware of such materials being on board until after warning stickers were posted last month. The ship is used to transport mainly freight between two ports.

In addition, Marine Atlantic hasĀ agreed to offer asbestos exposure tests to hundreds of former employees.

Exposure to asbestos has long been known to be a cause of the deadly lung cancer mesothelioma.
