A McLean County, Illinois, jury has awarded $2.6 million dollars to a widow whose husband died of a disease caused by asbestos exposure from a now-closed factory on Bloomington’s west side.

The lawsuit against Honeywell International accused the company of conspiring to hide asbestos danagers at the former UNARCO plant. 64-year-old John Watkins experienced the first symptoms of mesothelioma in 2004 and he died less than a year later. His widow, Ruth was awarded money for her pain and suffering, for her husband’s pain and suffering, and for a wrongful death. Central Illinois Railroad, which hauled in the asbestos, will also pay a portion of the damages for allegedly knowing about hazards and doing nothing to warn workers.
