Faced with continuing difficulties in removing debris and ruined houses containing asbestos due to health concerns, the St. Bernard Parish Council recently agreed to allow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to test an experimental asbestos disposal procedure involving burning the asbestos at high temperatures while using a high-velocity air current to contain any harmful emissions. The EPA says that the air quality will be monitored at all times to ensure no health risk is created.
Asbestos, a construction material widely used in the 20th century, has been linked to mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer.
