A report recently published in the Cancer Cell periodical details how scientists were able to model the progression of human malignant mesothelioma by using laboratory mice. They discovered that mutations in certain genetic pathways in the lining of the thoracic cavity caused a majority of mice to develop malignant mesothelioma. By tracking the cancer using bioluminescence imaging, researchers hope to gain new insights into mesothelioma, as well as access to a “mouse model” in which potential treatments and therapies could be tested.
Malignant mesothelioma is an incurable cancer of the mesothelial lining of the lungs and abdominal cavity caused by exposure to asbestos. Many patients with the disease die within a year of diagnosis.
