A San Francisco awarded a $7 million verdict to the plaintiffs in a mesothelioma lawsuit against asbestos manufacturer Georgia Pacific Corp.
Joan and John Mahoney sued Georgia Pacific, claiming that the asbestos it produced was the cause of Mrs. Mahoney’s mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is an incurable, terminal cancer linked to exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. The plaintiffs alleged that Georgia Pacific was negligent in continuing to manufacture asbestos even though they knew of its harmful effects.
The total verdict handed down by the jury was in the amount of $20 million. Of that, Georgia Pacific’s assigned responsibility covers approximately 1/3, or $7 million. The rest of the award will most likely not be paid.
