In 2001, the U.S. government sued W.R. Grace, a chemical manufacturing company, for creating asbestos pollution in Libby, Montana, under the Superfund law. The governement claimed that the company knew the dangers posed by the vermiculite mine in 1976, but continued to operate the mine and processing facilities nearby, until 1990.
This has caused hundreds of residents of Libby to get sick from asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma and asbestosis. There have been several deaths as a result.
In March 2008, Grace settled for $250 million dollars to pay for the investigation and clean up asbestos contaminated in Libby from the firm’s mine. This is one of the largest known settlements in this type of case.
