June Harry worked for Cooper Mechanical Joints, which produced car gaskets, from 1950-1953. During her employment there, she was exposed to asbestos. She was not provided with masks, wore no special protective clothing, and had no special washing station. Mrs. Harry became ill in June 2005 with mesothelioma. She died about a year later in May 2006.
Although the company she worked for is no longer in business, companies carry employer liability insurance to cover these claims. Her family received about $60,000 in an out-of-court settlement from asbestos bankruptcy fund set up by a number of firms, as well as compensation from the John Manville Trust fund in the USA, set up in 1988 to settle asbestos personal injury claims. John Manville was a company that exported asbestos to the UK.
