George Linkus worked at Key Highway Shipyard in Baltimore, Maryland, from 1952 to 1959. He worked in various departments in the ship yard. In 1954, he started working in the shipyard’s machine shop. As part of his job, he had to work on lining valves using ropes made by John Crane Inc. Key Highway Shipyard is a sealant company.
In 2006, George Linkus was diagnosed with Mesothelioma. He was 73-years-old at the time. The cause of Mesothelioma was traced back to the exposure to asbestos when he was working at the shipyard. The ropes, manufactured by Crane Inc., contained asbestos.
